Construction on the redevelopment of the King Edward is moving along on schedule. While some of this work not as noticeable as “new” construction, interior demolition has been underway since November and will take about 60 more days to complete. The twelfth floor and parts of 11 and 10 have been already been cleared, as we work our way down to the basement. Soon we will be installing the external construction elevator, demolishing the annex building, and demolishing the fourth floor swimming pool.
The King Edward Hotel restoration project includes a 186 room Hilton Garden Inn, a signature restaurant, bar, coffee shop, and a gift shop. The top 4 floors of the King Edward will house up to 56 up-scale apartments. The garage will provide 200+ spaces for tenants, guests and the public.
Since this is a design-build project, design work will continue on a daily basis with a steady parade of engineers and design consultants working on details of coordinating and implementation the restoration process. The construction schedule is still on track for a grand opening of the hotel in the summer of 2009.
The Standard Life Building is being designed as a mixed-used development, primarily housing 56 up-scale apartment units and ground floor shops and restaurants, though construction on that phase will not begin for several more months.
