JACKSON, Miss. -- Jackson Mayor Frank Melton is

singing a different tune about the King Edward Hotel

renovation project.

The developers opened up the site Tuesday to a tour for public officials and media.

The mayor had been one of the biggest opponents to the project to turn the old hotel into condos,

apartments and retail space -- but he said that's not the case anymore.

"You know, I kind of started off with a little

controversy to get this thing done because it

is so critical to Jackson, but I have been

working with David and his partners and

I'm very pleased," Melton said.

The cleanup work on the King Edward is

finished. Heavy construction is set to start

in November, with the project completion

date set for April 2009.
