Developers Finish King Ed Cleanup

JACKSON, Miss. -- Developers have officially finished the environmental cleanup of a downtown fixture. David Watkins said the investment group heading the King Edward renovation project has spent $1.5 million so far cleaning out asbestos, lead paint and pigeon waste.

"We made one fabulous discovery: The building is very strong," Watkins said.

The official deed transfer of the King Edward from the Jackson Redevelopment Authority is scheduled for this month. In October, financial closing will take place for investors that will provide them with uilding funds from the banks and tax credits.

Construction is set to begin in November, with completion sometime in March or April 2009.
